Off-Road Suspension Upgrades: What You Need to Know

A good off-roading adventure gives a hardcore adrenaline rush while crushing it over sand, gravel, mud, snow, riverbeds, and rocks. But when it comes to fast acceleration and heavy loads, your suspension can experience wear and tear over time and compromise even the toughest ATVs.

Here's what to know about off-road suspension upgrades to make the most of your ride and protect your vehicles.

Is Your Suspension Worth Upgrading?

If you want to take your off-roading adventures to new levels, you need to upgrade your suspension to make the most of your time on the trails. It improves the exhilaration of your ride and how well you can control the vehicle and handle rough, challenging terrain.

Of course, you don't want to spend a fortune on suspension upgrades until you have a clear understanding of what you want to do with it. Dropping a ton of money on off-roading upgrades when you only want to off-road occasionally may not be worth your time and money.

Is Soft or Firm Suspension Better?

There's no right or wrong choice between soft or firm suspension, it just depends on the ride you want. Soft springs absorb the bumps of your vehicles and are also used in traditional road vehicles. Firm springs are usually designed for sports vehicles for superior handling when tearing them up off and on the trails.

If you love an incredibly rugged ride, go for something firm. But soft suspension probably works best if you just want your vehicle to handle better on the highway or for some light off-roading.

What About Off-Roading Tires?

Tires directly impact the type of suspension you need; the larger you go, the bigger the obstacles you can cruise over. If you want big tires, you also need a suspension package to accommodate the height and strength required for a safe yet rugged ride.

If you choose tires up to 33 inches, a solid axle and spring suspension will work fine and can handle some light off-roading. When you upgrade to 35 inches, you need a coil spring suspension. Up to 37 inches, and you need some significant modifications.

Before you invest in new tires, make sure you understand the frame of your ATV, how big your tires should be, how big you could go, and how often you want to off-road. You want your investment to align with your interests and frequency of your time out on the trails.
